I don't know what the situation was in the 1930s, but Piatt's 1933 Gaelic Dialects of Leinster certainly treats it as all but dead, with the latest evidence of Maynooth having native speakers being from the late 1880s.

Hence it seems likely to me that the informant was either not a native speaker, or a native speaker of another area's Gaelic. I will update this note if I am able to find out more. I thought I would include this datapoint rather than automatically assume it does not represent any local dialect.",

The answer to the riddle elsewhere is always a word meaning frog. Here the answer is Athadán no frog air snamh. meaning 'athadán or frog swimming'. But I don't see how athadán could be some different creature that is an alternative answer. I'm sure it's an alternative name. Does it mean 'flighty thing' or 'eloper', from athadh + án? Or perhaps more likely, áth + adán (alternative form of án), with áth meaning shallow part of a river.

LASID point 35 gives a list of alternative words for frog heard in different areas. [ɑːdɑːn] is given as a Conamara word, which is a possible realisation of athadán. I don't actually know that much about the phonology of dialects outside Donegal, but this resource says intervocalic /h/ 'tends to disappear'.",

Annsin rinne an Laparán cásán agus chonnaiceas do Mhaicín nar chuala sé aon rud ariamh a bhí comh cosamhail le srannfach. Sheasuigh sé bomaite. Stad a' cásán agus thiocfadh leis lapadán an uisge a chluinstin go fóil ag bualadh n-éadán thaobanna an phíopa, agus é ag spréidheadh amach na fháinnibh ó'n áit ar léim an laparán síos.
As often happens, I can't be certain this is referring to a frog, but it seems likely to me. I am open to suggestions otherwise. The scene above seems to be set near Dungloe.",
